United Way 860Cares: Basic Needs is a volunteer opportunity focused on helping local food pantries across our service area meet increased community needs.

United Way is committed to ensuring people in our community have opportunities to access resources and give back. By participating in this 860CARES opportunity, you are helping neighbors across the East of the River, West Central, and Windham regions access essential food and household items during the winter months.

This opportunity is open to individuals, community groups, and corporate partners eager to make a difference. Together, we are United to End Poverty.

There are two ways you can get involved:
1) Volunteer:
Volunteers are needed for pantries in East Hartford, Willimantic, and Farmington at Tunxis Community College. Volunteers will receive a United Way T-shirt, take a group photo, and be briefed on the day’s activities before organizing donations and supporting participating pantry partners.
We encourage volunteers to bring donation items to the kickoff location. Suggested items may include nonperishable food, personal care products, paper goods, cleaning supplies, and other household essentials requested by participating food pantries.

Volunteer tasks may include:
Sorting food by type
Stocking shelves, refrigerators, and freezers
Checking expiration dates and disposing of expired items
Light cleaning (sweeping, wiping shelves, dusting)
Breaking down boxes for recycling
Inventory and signage placement and more

If you would like to coordinate a donation drive in your area or at your workplace, please reach out to Shannon McGill smcgill@unitedwayinc.org for details.

2) Donate:
Make a tax-deductible charitable donation to United Way's Rapid Response Fund, which provides direct cash assistance to people who are on the brink of losing stability. Rapid Response Funds help households close financial gaps so they remain housed during the cold winter months and avoid needing emergency shelter. Donate Here
