  • Presented by United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, with support from the Town of East Hartford and ShopRite!

United Way is committed to ensuring people in our community have equal access to resources, so everyone succeeds. By participating in this 860Cares opportunity, you are helping our neighbors avoid hunger and homelessness during the winter months.

There are two ways you can get involved:

1) Volunteer:

All volunteers will begin the day together at our kickoff location: Goodwin University Advanced Manufacturing Center, Room 111K. At the kickoff, volunteers will receive a United Way T-shirt, take a group photo, and be briefed on the day’s activities before heading out to their designated pantry locations.

Volunteer tasks may include:

  • Sorting food by type
  • Stocking shelves, refrigerators, and freezers
  • Checking expiration dates and disposing of expired items
  • Light cleaning (sweeping, wiping shelves, dusting)
  • Breaking down boxes for recycling
  • Inventory and signage placement
  • Basic administrative support (copies, data entry)
  • and more

We encourage volunteers to bring donation items to their pantry site. Suggested items include rice, beans, pasta, pasta sauce, any canned protein, toilet paper, shampoo, and laundry detergent.

2) Donate:

Make a tax-deductible charitable donation to United Way's Rapid Response Fund, which provides direct cash assistance to people who are one step away from becoming unhoused. For the third year in a row, homelessness is on the rise throughout the 860 region. Rapid Response Funds help households close financial gaps so they remain stably housed during the cold winter months and avoid needing emergency shelter.  Donate Here

PLUS: Starting Sunday, November 12, you can also support by purchasing a $10 donation bag at ShopRite, 31 Main St, East Hartford, CT 06118. Each bag contains essential items for local families and directly supports this initiative.

  1. This opportunity is open to individuals, community groups, and corporate partners eager to make a difference. Together, we are United to End Poverty.
